Navy Experience and Personal Background

Military Experience – U.S. Navy

Was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy and served in P-3 aircraft operations and as a Special Agent with the Naval Investigative Service. Stayed in the Navy Reserve after leaving active duty, and was eventually promoted to the rank of Captain. My military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and two Navy Commendation Medals. Am retired from military service.

Personal Background

Grew up on a farm in Western Iowa. Am a graduate of Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas, and the University of Iowa law school. Formerly served as a naval officer, a federal white collar crime prosecutor, and as general counsel to the Senate Agriculture Committee on Capitol Hill.

Also served as President of the Legal Services Corporation (a political appointment) during the second Reagan and Bush I Administrations and held a political appointment at the Labor Department in the G.W. Bush Administration. Have been in the private practice of law in between my revolving stints of employment with the federal government.

Currently reside in Springfield, VA.  Am a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and have been active in the pro-life cause for several years.
